It Ain't So Easy
03:50
|
|||
It’s been a while since I’ve seen your face
Since you’ve been in my arms
Since I wanted you there
Love vanished without a trace
I’m immune to your charms
I just don’t care.
(Whoa, Whoa)
Imagine if I’d understood
The way you wanted me to
The kind of man I could be.
Some nights, I would pretend that I could,
But it would never be true.
What if that mattered to me?
But it ain’t so easy, anyhow.
No, it ain’t so easy, in the here-and-now.
You’ve never found it easy just to live,
And I know I’m not that easy to forgive.
(Whoah((yodel)))
I can’t bring myself to ask where you’ve been
To hear what I’ve done
It’s not my concern.
I can’t listen to this lecture again.
I’m aware I was wrong; I’m not going to learn.
(Whoa, Whoa)
It’s easy, just to sit there and judge;
To say “How could you?”
Take the high road; it’s fine.
It’ll bring you satisfaction, the way it always does.
Hope it sees you on through;
I’ll take my own road—it’s mine,
But it ain’t so easy, anyhow.
No, it ain’t so easy, in the here and now.
You’ve never found it easy just to live,
And I know I’m not that easy to forgive.

Come On Down
04:50
|
|||
Well, the truth is clear, but isn’t so exciting
As a laser show put on by a circus clown.
It takes effort not to read such clever writing
On your own walls, although that tends to tear them down.
But, it’s never been your modus operandi
To do the things you need to do to make things right.
That’s the way it is; I find the tricks that we don’t try
Are the ones that bring us down,
Or the ones that let us down when it’s time to fight.
But if that’s not where you want to be,
You could always follow me to my destination.
And, if it’s entering your mind
To leave your loneliness behind and find salvation,
Then get your groove on
Get a move on
Come on down!
I said, get your groove on
Get a move on
Come on down!
I don’t know if you believe the things that you tell me,
But I know, one day, the axe is going to fall.
I suppose that’s just the way the things that we don’t see
Can sometimes put our backs against the wall.
I don’t know about the mountains you say you’re climbing;
That’s a point-of-view I just don’t comprehend.
If there’s one thing you do well, though, that thing is timing;
You can always find some time
Yeah, you always make the time to condescend.
But if that’s not where you want to be,
You could always follow me to my destination.
And, if it’s entering your mind
To leave your loneliness behind and find salvation,
Then get your groove on
Get a move on
Come on down!
I said, get your groove on
Get a move on
Come on down!

By The Edge Of The Sea
07:12
|
|||
When I told you that I loved you, you said you’d follow me—
But not just anywhere.
Halfway across the sea could never quite compare
And I could never be
The one to take you there
Oh, but even as I tried, I knew you’d rather die than waste your precious years,
And, really, so would I,
Though, as my vision clears, I can watch you pass me by—
Move beyond the tears.
But I can’t forget your smile
With your hand in my hand as we walked
By the edge of the sea;
You were looking at me, and you made me believe.
If only for a while,
I believed when you smiled.
And I just can’t forgive myself
For allowing my senses to fail;
That was all on me. By the edge of the sea,
Though it was naïve,
If only in that smile,
I believed for a while.
Time heals all wounds, but, in the meantime, I don’t know what to do.
I was shaken by the sea;
taken with the sight of you.
You were standing next to me,
And I thought I’d broken through, but the truth was plain to see.
But I can’t forget your smile
With your hand in my hand as we walked
By the edge of the sea;
You were looking at me, and you made me believe.
If only for a while,
I believed when you smiled.
And I just can’t forgive myself
For allowing my senses to fail;
That was all on me. By the edge of the sea,
Though it was naïve,
If only in that smile,
I believed for a while.

The Flow
05:11
|
|||
To all the righteous people by my side,
I say thanks to all at once, and to each one.
If you’re looking for somebody bona-fide,
You can find his fingerprints upon his gun.
The flow of water tends to draw your tears,
And the wind that blows your hair can move my soul,
But it changes with the passing of the years,
And I’ve got no concept of what I was up to before—
And I’m sure
I’m on the other side of the door, but I need you
Too much to let you go,
And I don’t know how to convey what I need you to know
But that’s me; I was never one to let things be,
And I’ve got the notion to tell you so,
But I think, on balance, I would rather just go with the flow.
If the borders of your world are on your mind, you should look within yourself and to the sky.
When the world rejects us, we respond in kind, and, in consequence, we tend to self-deny.
But denial never frees us from the pain, and a fantasy is only worth so much.
I don’t reckon there’s much reason to complain, but I would rather live in a universe I can
touch—
And I’m sure
I’m on the other side of the door, but I need you
Too much to let you go,
And I don’t know how to convey what I need you to know
But that’s me; I was never one to let things be,
And I’ve got the notion to tell you so,
But I think, on balance, I would rather just go with the flow.

Desiree
07:10
|
|||
Years ago, I recall, you spoke to me;
you told me something I knew you’d say,
About the way it was not meant to be;
I told you time was more than a day.
(Yeah…)
Jazz is playing in an empty mall;
The song I dreamed that they would play.
Snow’s coming down, and we watch it fall;
Thinking of you, as always, Desiree.
(Yeah…)
Desiree (Yeah)
Desiree (Aaah)
I’m living my life as though I’m dying
Half of it dreaming, and half of it crying.
See the sights of today in the light of tomorrow;
The visions I leave, but the lessons I borrow.
I’m not a believer, but you wish I would pray—
To whom should I pray in hell, then, Desiree?
Ah, Desiree…
You said you loved other men than I;
I said that didn’t bother me none
Cause around the time we said goodbye,
I had a feeling I was one.
(Yeah…)
I tried to move from place to place;
I tried loving other women, too.
But, in the night, you know, my thoughts would race,
And they’d find their way to you.
Back to you!
Back to you…
Desiree (Yeah)
Desiree (Aaah)
I’m living my life as though I’m dying
Half of it dreaming, and half of it crying.
See the sights of today in the light of tomorrow;
The visions I leave, but the lessons I borrow.
I’m not a believer, but you wish I would pray—
To whom should I pray in hell, then, Desiree?
Desiree… Desiree… Desiree...Desiree…
Desiree… Desiree… Desiree……….
If I pretend it’s you behind every door,
Then every lock is worth dying for.

Second Line
05:21
|
|||
When I was only a child, I never quite believed
That I would have to someday leave the stage.When it came to stretching the truth, there was
nothing quite like my youth, so it was hard to engage.
But, here I am, engaging at last,Without a moment to spare, completely in my prime.
Yet, I find, I’m inclined to leave such moments behind, If it’ll spare me some time.
I know I have it in me to be the man you’ve always needed,
And I don’t intend to waste my time
On all my doubts and all my demons;
I might as well believe in destiny,
Cause that’s the way that it’s looking
At the second line.
When you fall down on your knees, does it give you a view
Of something you can’t see with your head held high?
Every once in a while, I look over and smile, but that’s just by the by.
I couldn’t tell you what a blind man sees, but I can tell I’m going nowhere if I don’t get gone
today. There’s no magnetic force just to keep me on course; I’ve gotta find my own way,
Cause--
I know I have it in me to be the man you’ve always needed,
And I don’t intend to waste my time
On all my doubts and all my demons;
I might as well believe in destiny,
Cause that’s the way that it’s looking
At the second line.
If I ever made you cry,
Ever caused you pain,
You’ve gotta know, that was never my intent.
I always felt like I knew what I needed to do, but never said what I meant,
So, I can understand why you’d believe that I was working from motives which weren’t entirely
pure,
But, if you’re coming with me, then I can help you to see whatever seemed so obscure.
I know I have it in me to be the man you’ve always needed,
And I don’t intend to waste my time
On all my doubts and all my demons;
I might as well believe in destiny,
Cause that’s the way that it’s looking
At the second line.
