lyrics

When I told you that I loved you, you said you’d follow me—
But not just anywhere.
Halfway across the sea could never quite compare
And I could never be
The one to take you there
Oh, but even as I tried, I knew you’d rather die than waste your precious years,
And, really, so would I,
Though, as my vision clears, I can watch you pass me by—
Move beyond the tears.
But I can’t forget your smile
With your hand in my hand as we walked
By the edge of the sea;
You were looking at me, and you made me believe.
If only for a while,
I believed when you smiled.
And I just can’t forgive myself
For allowing my senses to fail;
That was all on me. By the edge of the sea,
Though it was naïve,
If only in that smile,
I believed for a while.
Time heals all wounds, but, in the meantime, I don’t know what to do.
I was shaken by the sea;
taken with the sight of you.
You were standing next to me,
And I thought I’d broken through, but the truth was plain to see.
But I can’t forget your smile
With your hand in my hand as we walked
By the edge of the sea;
You were looking at me, and you made me believe.
If only for a while,
I believed when you smiled.
And I just can’t forgive myself
For allowing my senses to fail;
That was all on me. By the edge of the sea,
Though it was naïve,
If only in that smile,
I believed for a while.
